To measure the diameter of a prop, you need to measure the distance between the hub and the end of one blade then you multiply it by two. If your vessel has a big engine, you need to go a prop with a large diameter. Pitch can be defined as the accelerative movement produced by a propeller per one complete rotation and is quantified in inches. It is important to carefully select a prop with the right pitch depending on the engine size of your boat. If you select a prop with a pitch that does not directly corresponds to the power of the engine, you will end up having engine failures.

The other important thing to factor in is the number of blades that an acme propeller has. Here! you will not be considering the size. However, when you think of changing the number of blades in a solas propeller, you will need to adjust the pitch and diameter of the said prop. The most common number of blades is three and four for most props. Four and three blade props can be used interchangeably on inboard propellers and outboard with affecting the performance of the boat.

If you choose a composite prop you will have to buy a new one every time when it breakdown but it is less bulky, flexible, durable and affordable. For aluminum acme propellers; their weight is average, flexible and easy to repair but cost more than composite propellers. If aluminum and composite acme propellers do not look appealing to you, you can opt for a stainless steel prop that weighs more, less flexible, is difficult to repair and costs more.
