6 Facts About Covers Everyone Thinks Are True

How to Design an Effective Catchy and Memorable Book Cover

When you have so many books vying for readers’ attention, a striking cover can make all the difference. So now the question is, what makes a successful book cover?

If you’ve decided to self-publish your book, here are pointers to help you in the cover design process:

Give the cover focus – this is the most important. Your book has a subject, and the cover should to reflect that one idea loud and clear. Don’t overcrowd your cover with too many items.

Think of your book cover as a billboard, trying to catch prospects’ attention as they speed by. Effective billboards have 6 words max. You have to grasp the message in 3-5 seconds at 60 miles per hour. That should be true for your book cover. Just one glance from your prospects and they should know your book’s genre, focus, and tone.

Any element that you include in your design should contribute to your overall message. Make every element count.

White backgrounds will disappear on retailers’ white screens, so don’t use one. Something with texture or perhaps an illustration, should be safe. You don’t want to lose a sale just because of a trivial and totally preventable issue like this.

Reduce your cover design to about the size of an Amazon thumbnail and see if it’s still readable. It has to be readable.

Talking about readability, choose a font that’s easy to read even when reduced radically. Also, watch out for lacy script typefaces – they usually disappear when small.

Choose an image that clarifies instead of being too literal. For example, it may expresses the mood or the era during which the events took place.

This tends to be tricky because your choice of colors will obviously depend on your book’s overall tone or theme. The general rule is, don’t use too many to avoid distracting readers from the main message of your cover. Also check out some color palettes online and choose a selection of colors that you think will work well together.

Remember, you don’t want to copy anyone’s work, but you can always get inspiration and ideas from them. This is a very effective way of encouraging your mind to think and come up with its own concepts and ideas.
